Doubles title for Rui Wang and Yan Wang:
By Richard DWIGHT
The ITF Junior circuit (week one) tennis tournament ended on a highly
successful note for the 15-year-old Chinese Jun Nan Tao when he
performed splendidly to win the coveted singles title by defeating Sri
Lanka’s T. Dineshkanthan 6/2, 6/0 yesterday at the SLTA courts.
Both Tao the No. 3 seed and Dineshkanthan the fourth seed, talented
as they are, played consistently well right through this week long
tournament to enter the finals.
In the first set Tao did seem to arrest the initiative by moving fast
on the court and, with a very strong back hand and a penetrative serve
took the lead only to be countered by Dineshkanthan who with his
precision service and deft placements was on par with Tao on 2 points
each. Thereafter Dineshkanthan had to go along with his serve but he
failed to break Tao’s serve nor hold his serve which led to Tao
continuing to lead and take the first set at 6/2. Tao in the second set
kept going on for the lines with much success and came off well in the
long rallies too and, with Dineshkanthan erring at times, Tao won the
set 6/0 and the match itself. Though Dineshkanthan lost, the scores do
not reflect how each point was keenly fought and conceded.
In the earlier boys doubles the Sri Lankan duo of T. Dineshkanthan
and Amresh Jayawickrema taking on the Chinese combination of Zhoul Cao
and Jun Nan Tao were hard pressed to give of their best, they took the
closely contested first set at 6/4 and fought hard to win the second set
at 7/6 to win the match and the doubles title.
The girls doubles finals that was played yesterday, witnessed the
Chinese pair Rui Wang and Yan Wang beat the Indian combination, Divija
Mandava and S. Shivalingaiah 6/3, 6/4.
