RTP Sri Lanka a finalist at the World Travel Awards 2009

Recognised as the hallmark of excellence, the world's most prestigious awards programme has selected RTP as a finalist for World's Leading Responsible Scheme at the World Travel Awards 2009 to be held on November 8, in London. World Travel Oscars which has been acknowledging the leading travel products around the globe for 15 years are held to celebrate the enormous achievements of the industry. Furthermore, the WTA will establish a bigger platform for green and responsible tourism products by introducing the Green awards ceremony. WTA events are a forum to access, network and do business with the people who shape the industry and its future.

Responsible Tourism Partnership (RTP) was established in Sri Lanka in April 2006 as a sustainable tourism programme to develop and implement practical sustainable tourism solutions to help protect and enhance Sri Lanka as a tourist destination. The RTP promotes Sri Lanka as a highly valued responsible tourism destination for visitors; coordinating and managing the delivery of tourism related projects with the objective of contributing towards the economic, environmental and social well-being of the people of Sri Lanka. RTP has delivered several sustainable tourism projects in conservation Trees for Life, promoting local crafts 'Dickwella Lace', promoting community tourism LINC project in Beruwela, engaging tourists in responsible tourism. A Guide for Responsible Travellers' responsible and hotel sector climate change mitigation, carbon reduction islandwide programme, 'Greening Sri Lanka Hotels'.

Charmarie Maalge of the RTP said that 'This is delightful news for everyone at the RTP and it's very heartening to know that our work has been discovered by the industry for nomination and for voting for this prestigious recognition. This is excellent acknowledgment of our groundbreaking work in responsible tourism in Sri Lanka.

The World Travel Awards launched in 1993 to acknowledge and recognize excellence in the world's travel and tourism industry. Now celebrating its 15th anniversary, the awards are regarded as the very highest achievement that a travel product could ever hope to receive. Thousands of votes are cast by travel professionals from 167,000 travel agencies, tour and transport companies and tourism organizations in over 160 countries across the globe. Votes are cast globally by fellow industry professionals in 919 different categories.
