Awards presentation...... Director of the Russian Centre Ayrat
Akhmetov (right) presents a award to Perinya Peiris who won the
under 11 Lightning Chess Tournament conducted by the Anatoly
Karpov Chess Club to commemorate the 11th anniversary. Mrs.
Suneetha Wijesuriya - the President of the AKCC and Bandula
Withanage, Web Master were also present.

CHESS: The lady President of the Anatoly Karpov Chess Club - Mrs.
Suneetha Wijesuriya is a lady with a mission. Her aim is to create one
or more Grand Masters in the country. At the 11th anniversary
celebrations of the Anatoly Karpov Chess Club at the Russian Centre,
Mrs. Suneetha Wijesuriya said: “Our neighbours India is bringingforth
even under 12 young Grand Masters, why Sri Lanka cannot do the same, she
simply cannot understand.
Mrs. Wijesuriya made a fervent appeal to all those present to make an
effort to find a Grand Master in the near future. The Director of the
Russian Centre Mr. Ayrat Akhmetov - Director of the Russian Centre said
that he appreciated the work done by the Russian Centre under the able
leadership of Mrs. Suneetha Wijesuriya in spreading chess around the
country and added that the Russian Centre will give all the help for the
centre to bring out some Grand Masters in the game of chess in the
country.
Mr. Ramal Jasinghe - President of the Mercantile Chess Association
said that from the day Mrs. Suneetha Wijesuriya came and discussed the
setting up of the Anatoly Karpov Chess Club in 1998, he learnt that she
was doing a lot of promotional work in the island for chess and wished
that she would be able to produce Grand Masters in the country in the
near future.
Major General Siri Ranaweera - Director of Defence Services College,
Dr. Punyadasa Kuruppu, Principal of Isipathana College and Mr.
Buddhapriya Ramanayake - Chief Executive Officer of the Russian Centre
were also present at the function.
