World Bank to fund higher education

The World Bank has agreed to fund the higher education advancing project 'Higher Education for 21st Century' following a meeting with Higher Education Minister Prof. W. A. Wiswa Warnapala.The Bank will fund the project without counterpart funds from the Sri Lankan Government.

During the meeting the Minister stressed the necessity of implementing this project in Sri Lanka following the successful progress of the 'Improve the Relevance and Quality of Undergraduate Education' project.

The special objective of this project is to develop the foundation of the higher education sector of Sri Lanka while improving the quality, economic and social relevance of the service offered by Sri Lankan universities.

Meanwhile, the project also aims to develop an alternative higher education sector and to strengthen the organisational capacity and human resources of the higher education sector.
