S. Africa's decision boomerangs

DURBAN, Dec. 26 - South Africa, electing to bat first, were 175 for 5 midway in the final session on day one of their second Test against England here today.

South Africa's decision to take the first lease boomeranged as the home team was reduced to 10 for 2 in the tenth over. Opener Ashley Prince was caught by Swann off Anderson for two before Board trapped one drop batsman Amla leg before also for two as he hosts were reeling at 10 for 2 in 9.4 overs.

But opener Smith and middle order batsman Kallis did the repair job with a fruitful third wicket stand of 150 runs. But the departure of Kallis for 75, made off 132 balls with seven fours, with the total on 160 brought misfortune to South African camp once more as they lost three wickets within the space of ten runs.

South Africa: 175 for 5 in 61 overs (Smith 75, Kallis 75) vs. England.
