H’tota port project ahead of schedule
Undoubtedly Hambantota is the most rapidly
developing region in Sri Lanka at present with billions of rupees
being pumped in during the last four years. One would say that
Hambantota came into focus because President Mahinda Rajapaksa hails
from the area. It’s true that the President’s initiative helped
complete the ongoing projects in or even ahead of time.

Heralding a new era
Thirty years of conflictwould leave a region
underdeveloped with damaged buildings, lack of facilities and people
fighting for survival. Access would be limited due to poor road
conditions and tourists would shun the area as they would not want
to visit due to lack of infrastructure facilities and more
importantly would not see any smiling faces.

Mega development drive
The Anuradhapura and Polonnaruwa districts in
the North Central Province are regarded as the `Rice Bowls’ of Sri
Lanka. The NCP known as `Rajarata’ was called `Wevubendi Raajya’ -
`the country dotted with tanks.’ Anuradhapura, the largest district
in the Island with an extent of 7199 SQ KM has a population of
791,000, of which 90% live in rural areas.

Somali pirates urged to release Lankan crew
The Somali pirates who hijacked the Saudi ship
Al-Nisr Al-Saudi on Monday have said they will not harm the vessel’s
crew, a Sri Lankan diplomat told Sunday Observer on
yesterday.Al-Nisr al-Saudi was hijacked in the Gulf of Aden on
Monday with a 14-member crew aboard, which include 13 Sri Lankans
and the ships’ Greek captain, Georgios Skalimis.
