Rangana 5-54 hero on day one

Hero on the opening day of the 81st Battle of the Maroons Rangana Cooray who captured 5/54 to restrict Ananda to 191.

Cricket: Lefthander Ruwinda Shamen stroked a defiant half century (66) and shared a valuable 65 runs stand for the 8th wicket with skipper Matheesha Perera to hold Ananda to total 191 against Nalanda in the 81st Battle of the Maroons-Big Match played at the SSC grounds, Maitland Place, yesterday.

Nalanda in reply were 69 for 2 in 21 overs at the close.

Ananda sent into bat started disastrously losing the first three wickets for 8 runs in just 5.3 overs. Both Nalanda paceman Rangana Cooray and Adeesha Nanayakkara created Ananda early trouble.

Opener Geshan Wimaladharma was out for duck in the first over while Udesh Nadeeranga (4) and Minura Janadi (0) were dismissed in the 3rd and 5th overs.

Ananda recovered through Pasindu Madushan (27) and Sachin Devage (17) who batted intelligently to a 32 runs partnership for the 4th wicket. Ananda were reeling at 5 for 85 due to an impressive and on the spot bowling by right arm paceman Rangana Cooray who claimed 5 for 54 in 17 overs with two maidens.

Ananda however managed to reach 106 for 7 in 60 overs. Then both lefthanders Ruwinda Shamen who top scored with 66 including 8 boundries and skipper Matheesha Perera 35 with 5 fours batted with authority and guts to put on 65 valuable runs for the 8th wicket for Ananda to reach to respectable score of 191 runs, off 71.5 overs.

Adeesha Nanayakkara 2 for 43 and Nipun Nanayakkara 2 for 19 supported Rangana Cooray, bowling effectively. Nalanda in reply to Ananda's 191 were 69 for 2 off 21 overs with Nipun Karunanayake unbeaten with 38 with 6 fours and Suranga Tennakoon unbeaten 7.
