By Kalabhooshanam Chelvatamby Maniccavasagar
The Thirumarai Kala Manthra (Centre for Performing Arts) "Kalaithuthu
College of Aesthetics" Jaffna held its annual dance programmes recently
presided over by Professor Rev. N. M. Saveri.
In this dance programme which included Pushpanjali, Alaarippu,
Jatheeswaram, Varnam, children's dance, Keerthanam, Patham, Jhillana and
various other dance forms more than 50 students participated.
Kalaithuthu College of Aesthetics was established by Professor Rev.
N.M. Saveri two years ago with several other dedicated artistes of high
standard to give an opportunity for students to learn Bharatha Natyam
and various other dance forms.
The Centre for Performing Arts has completed 45 years of service to
all the communities irrespective of caste, creed and religion. In fact
there are 10 centres in Sri Lanka for Sinhala artistes and 10 centres
for Tamil artistes in Sri Lanka.
Prof. Saveri is of the view that art, drama, music and dance and
other cultural activities are the natural result of a development of the
mind and heart of man. It is a reflection of his individual and social
ethos.
It is also a very effective means of communication and inter action
between different cultures and communities. Their diversity cannot, but
be considered a blessing if any nation is to develop. Further it has to
foster not only the growth of its own cultural heritage but also intra
cultural and inter-cultural exchanges.
