Refrain from garbage dumping - Omar Kamil
by Ananda Kannangara
The Colombo Municipal Council (CMC) Special Commissioner Omar Kamil
on Friday warned people to refrain from dumping garbage in streams,
water ways and canals in the city and suburbs since it causes the
submerging of roads even during a light shower.
Referring to Thursday's thundershowers that were experienced in
several parts of the country, including in the city of Colombo and
suburbs, the Special Commissioner said steps have already been taken to
carry out programs with relevant authorities to minimise floods on
highways. He said Thursday's floods badly affected motorists and heavy
traffic congestion was seen in the morning hours. He also said Bokundara
at Piliyandala on the Colombo-Horana Road is very often getting
submerged on rainy days and steps must be taken to rectify the
situation.
"Sometimes the water level does not recede for over five hours and it
badly affects office workers and school children,".
Special Commissioner, Kamil further said that dumping of garbage by
certain people without ignoring the gravity of the situation is the main
cause for this and people, especially the younger generation must be
aware of it.
Meanwhile, Meteorologist Nandalal Peiris told the Sunday Observer
that sudden thundershowers were experienced in the Western, Southern,
Sabaragamuwa and Central provinces during the past four days and more
showers could be experienced during the next three days.
