The Tamil National Alliance (TNA) is confident that the new
Government will react positively to solve the national problem in a
constructive manner.
TNA Leader Rajavarothayam Sampanthan told the Sunday Observer that
the TNA will consider all aspects of the proposed Constitutional reforms
aimed at solving several national issues, including the grievances of
the Tamil-speaking people.
“These reforms need to be acceptable to solve the grievances of
Tamil-speaking people and we hope the Government would look into the
matter in a very constructive manner”, he said.
Sampanthan said that his 14-member MP team would support the
Rajapaksa Government if the Government would work towards implementing
the proposed Constitutional reforms for the benefit of the
Tamil-speaking people and also for the entire country.
“But the process needs to be very constructive and positive towards
solving the desired issue”, he said.
It is reported that the TNA has been pressurised by India to join the
Rajapaksa Government but Sampanthan has denied it. He said that the TNA
would not give into any pressure from anyone and the decisions were
solely based on the party.
“We are not pressurised by India or any other country to support the
Government but the TNA is in close touch with India and also with the
international community”, he said.
According to Sampanthan, the TNA had discussed its willingness to
support the Government in the proposed Constitutional reforms with India
and with other countries.
“But, India hopes the Government will solve the national issue
without delay in a very constructive manner”, he said.
