Deaf Schools sports activities on June 5 and 19

DEAF SPORTS: Deaf Schools sports activities will be in full swing this month.

The Six-a-Side Softball Cricket and the Netball Tournament will be played on Saturday, June 5 at the Shalika Grounds, Narahenpita starting at 8.30 a.m.

The Deaf Schools Volleyball Tournament for both boys and girls will be from 8.30 a.m. on June 5.

The above tournaments are organised by the Deaf School Past Pupils Association, the School for the Deaf Ratmalana and are sponsored by Chevron Lubricants Lanka (PLC) Limited for the 9th successive year.

The ‘father’ of Deaf Schools Sports Activities - Shivantha Vivekanandan is once again at it this year and his organising committee with assistance from the sponsors are doing a fine job in organising this year’s activities too as they had done in the past.

In cricket, the School for the Deaf, Ratmalana are fancied to win at cricket and netball.

Then at volleyball, last year’s champions Rohana Special School, Matara are likely to win the boys volleyball, while in the women’s tourney, Siviraja Deaf and Blind School are fancied to win the other strong contenders are Islamic Centre for Physically Handicapped in Thihariya, Yasodara Deaf and Blind School, Bandarawela and Sayan Deaf School, Matale, the School for the Deaf and Blind, Tangalle and Sandagala Special School, Kurunegala and Senkadagala School for the Deaf, Kandy are expected to give the fancied teams a run for their money.

There will be Caltex Trophies and replicas that will be awarded. In addition there will be gifts to the Best Batsman, Best Bowler, best fielder and the man of the match in cricket, best player and best shooter in netball and the best player (boys and girls) in volleyball too will be richly rewarded.

According to the president of the Deaf Schools sports Association - Shivantha Vivekanandan, the aim is to promote deaf schools sports activities. He said that deaf schoolchildren have improved in their activities at international level.

Entry forms for the sports events can be obtained from K.T.T. Sumanadasa, Hony. Secretary, Deaf School Past Pupils’ Association, the School for the Deaf, Ratmalana or to Mrs. Marie Wijeyaratne (Principal) on 2636351 during school hours.

Entries close on May 23.
