Motor Racing: Super rider Gayan Sandaruwan clocked the fastest timing
of the day at the annual Radella Speed Hill Climb organised by the Sri
Lanka Association of Racing Drivers and Riders (SLARDAR) worked off at
the Radella Short cut in Somerest Group, Nanu Oya. Buy heavy rain mid
way during the meet brought an early end to the hill climb and the
faster super cars which had a record 15 entries and the event for Group
SL-H cars upto 1600 could not be worked off due to wet track. Usually it
is from the Super cars event that the fastest timing of the day is
registered.
Gayan Sandaruwan just cut of teens and had made a name for himself in
circuit races and motocross clocked the fastest time of 37.70 seconds in
the event for Group MX Racing Motocross bikes upto 125 cc. He was just
cutside the class record of 36.14 seconds held by him. Versatile Pasindu
Peiris was another rider to clock under 40 seconds during the day when
he timed 39.47 seconds in the same event. Both riders rode in a Honda
CRF 250 cc.
A total of three class record all in the two wheeler category fell
during the day. The first record to go was in the very first event of
the day itself when S.D. Weerasinghe timed 51.72 second to eclipse the
existing record of 54.75 seconds held by M.C.S. Perera in the event for
Group ‘O’ Standard Motor Cycles upto 125 cc - Four stroke single
cylinder.
The second class record in the fourth event of the day when the
versatile Maduranga Galdera riding a Honda CER in the event for Group
‘O’ Standard Motor Cycles upto 250 cc (4 stroke) clocked 42.49 seconds
to erase the class record of 44.49 seconds held by W. Wijayakumar. The
earlier record was better by the second placed V.T. Shantharam (43.71
secs) and V.T. Vijayakumar (44.03 secs.) in the same event.
The third record to go was in the Group MI Racing motor bikes upto
125 cc with rider Chinthaka Nishantha Weerasinghe doing an extremely
good run.
