Canada’s foreign minister to visit Haiti
OTTAWA, April 30, 2010 AFP - Canada’s Foreign Minister
Lawrence Cannon announced Friday he will visit Haiti from May 5 to 7 to
review reconstruction efforts following January’s devastating quake.
“Haiti is at a turning point in its history, and this trip will be an
opportunity to reiterate to our Haitian partners that Canada will stand
by Haiti as it recovers from the January 12 earthquake and works toward
building a new Haiti,” Cannon said in a statement.
“It will also allow me to witness first-hand Canada’s contributions
at work.”
While in Haiti, Cannon will meet President Rene Preval and Prime
Minister Jean-Max Bellerive, as well as partners from the international
community, the United Nations Stabilization Mission in Haiti, members of
the private sector, civil society representatives and Canadians working
in Haiti.
The minister plans to visit Jacmel and Leogane, where Canadian Forces
were deployed after the earthquake, and the nearly completed
Canadian-funded Croix-des-Bouquets prison. |
