Minister of Plantation Industries Mahinda Samarasinghe presided over a ceremony to grant assistance to coconut farmers from the Jaffna District at the GA’s office under a program to bring 100,000 acres under coconut cultivation in the North. Here the Minister presents assistance to a coconut cultivator. Deputy Plantations Minister Salinda Dissanayake, Ministry Secretary Malini Peiris and the GAs of Jaffna and Mullaitivu also participated in this event.


Local Government and Provincial Councils Minister A. L. M. Athaulla has launched a program to uplift the infrastructure facilities of the local government institutions. Action has been taken to provide official cabs to 14 local bodies. Here Minister Athaulla hands over the documents of a new cab worth over Rs. 6.2 million to Bandarawela UC Chairman G. M. Suriyage Ministry Secretary Dr. Nihal Jayatilake and Additional Secretary A. A. Majid were also present.


 

President Premadasa commemoration

The Premadasa Centre is engaged in a project to reconstruct public facilities in Makkanigama at Wattegama, Kandy. The first phase of this project has been completed and an upgraded community hall, will be opened on June 23 to mark the 87th birth anniversary of President Ranasinghe Premadasa.

The commemoration ceremony will commence at 9.30 a.m. at Makkanigama. It will be followed by an alms-giving for the Maha Sangha, organised by the villagers.

The Department of Sinhala, University of Colombo, is planning to establish a Society of Graduates who had studied special degree in Sinhala at the University of Colombo.

Australia to invest in KKS cement

The Australian Government will contribute in the investment process to restart production in Kankesanthurai Cement factory which has been stalled for the past three decades owing to unrest in the Jaffna peninsula, Australian High Commissioner in Sri Lanka Kathy Klugman said.

This follows a meeting with Industries and Commerce Minister Rishad Badiudeen at his Ministry recently.

During the meeting attention was focused towards strengthening bilateral trade activities between the two countries and ways and means to expand the export and import sectors between two countries more effectively.


Sea food items at CWE outlets

The Fisheries and Aquatic Resources Development Ministry is now selling sea food items to consumers through Cooperative Wholesale Establishment (CWE) branches throughout the country, Ministry sources said. According to a top ranking officer, the Ministry hopes to create a competitive environment which would result in minimising the monopoly of the private sector fish sellers. Consumers could purchase fish at a fair price. Due to lack of financial resources the Fisheries Corporation purchased a small quantity of fish in the past.

 


 

 

Inter-religious symposium

A religious delegation headed by Swami Dayananda Saraswathi, a renowned spiritualist from India is currently in the island to promote and foster the historic religious and cultural ties between India and Sri Lanka.

The Indian spiritualists along with the members of the Mahabodhi Society of Sri Lanka engaged in a two-day symposium on Inter-religious Cooperation. The Lankan Hindu religious dignitaries have also joined in the interaction between the Lankan and Indian spiritual leaders.

The program of the Indian spiritualists included the visit to the Buddhist and Hindu temples in Colombo, meeting with the Prime Minister, Dialogue with Sri Lankan bhikkhus and scholars, and a Hindu-Buddhist dialogue.

The dialogues highlights three topics:

Exploring the means to bring back mutual trust and confidence between the Sinhalese and the Tamils, Restoring the Hindu temples in Sri Lanka, Building permanent peace and understanding between Buddhist and Hindus.


Conference to eliminate child labour

A conference to validate Sri Lanka's road map for the elimination of the worst forms of child labour by 2016 will be held in Colombo on June 21.

More than 450 delegates from 80 member States of the International Labour Organisation convened in the Hague, the Netherlands May 10 and 11, and agreed on a global roadmap aimed at 'substantially increasing' global efforts to eliminate the worst forms of child labour by 2016. In response to this global commitment, during this conference in the Hague, the Sri Lankan Government represented by Minister of Labour Relations and Production Promotion, Gamini Lokuge pledged to eliminate the worst forms of child labour by 2016.

The Government also presented a Road Map for the elimination of the worst forms of child labour by 2016, which details a process of main streaming into State interventions, the prevention, withdrawal, rehabilitation and reintegration of children who have been engaged in the worst forms of child labour. While the lead ministry in this issue is the Ministry of Labour Relations and Productivity Promotion, all stakeholder ministries, district secretaries, provincial councils and law enforcement will need to come together in partnership with the international community to eradicate this particular form of abuse of children.


Wine store owner robbed at gunpoint

Unidentified gunmen robbed the owner of a wine store at Dehiowita and got away with the day's collection of over Rs. 200,000 late Friday evening. The gang who lay in ambush near the gate of his residence at Avissawella fired a few shots in the air after snatching the cash and proceeded in the direction of Kegalle, in a three wheeler followed by a motorcycle.

Avissawella police are conducting investigations under the direction of DIG Crimes. No arrests have been made so far. JW.


She needs hearing aid

Baby Chathurya Tharushi Jayawardana (5) of No. 64, Sri Rahula Mawatha, Kalubowila is afflicted with hearing impairment resulting in speech impediment as well.

Her parents who are in needy circumstances appeal for public assistance, for the purchase of hearing aid. Contribution may be remitted to A/C No. 038010008737 of the Hatton National Bank Piliyandala.


Heart patient seeks assistance

Retired private sector employee J.P. Sirisena (67) of 483/1, Weera Mawatha, Depanama, Pannipitiya diagnosed with a heart ailment (Double Vessel Disease) underwent successful heart surgery by Consultant Cardiologist of the National Hospital, Colombo, Dr. S. Narenthiran. For post-operative care a wide range of expensive drugs have been prescribed which he cannot afford and he appeals to the generous public to contribute to purchase the drugs by remitting to A/C No. 306-2-001-7-1103501 of the People's Bank, Maharagama Branch.


Please help restore his vision

Twenty-seven-year-old, M.N. Nuwan Prasad of Rawa-Ela, Thalakolawewa, Kurunegala was blinded in both eyes in an acid-throwing attack in 2004.

Despite being from a poor family with the help of friends and well-wishers he underwent seven operations at "Shanker Nethralaya" Hospital in Chennai, India. As a result of these operations his vision on the left eye is partly restored.

As he has to undergo another surgery at the same hospital to get his vision fully restored in August 2010. He appeals to the generous of the kind-hearted people to help in this good cause.
