Wimal’s daughter who did it

Answering a phone call from President Mahinda Rajapaksa, the weeping wife of Minister Wimal Weerawansa - Sashi, requested President to rescue her husband in any possible way.

While talking to the President, she has stated that their daughter has been refusing to eat since her father is on a hunger strike. When President Rajapaksa contacted the Minister’s daughter over the phone, she has pleaded with the President to bring her father home for lunch the next day.

“If you have your dinner tonight I will definitely bring your father home tomorrow”, promised the President.

Thereafter President then contacted the doctor treating Minister Weerawansa: “Doctor, I have promised Wimal’s daughter that her father would be home for lunch tomorrow. She took her dinner because I told so. Can you explain this to him” asked the President. The doctor replied that he could well understand the situation as he too has a daughter.

President then held lengthy discussions with the Minister, Deputy Minister and the Secretary of External Affairs Ministry and NFF representatives including Jayantha Samaraweera.

They were looking at solutions for problems raised by international elements that this is a ploy on the part of the Government as Weerawansa being a Cabinet Minister and a solution to safeguard the friendly relations between the UN and the government. Finally, they came to a conclusion that it will have no impact whatsoever on the Minister and his conduct.

However, keeping in mind his promise to the Minister’s daughter, President directed the NFF representatives to explain the situation to Weerawansa, the problems faced by the Government, about his daughter’s condition and to convince Weerawansa to give up the fast.

When the doctor informed the President that Weerawansa could only survive another 12 hours as his kidneys had been affected, he called the Minister again. “Sir, even if you come personally I will not give up my fight”, was Weerawansa’s firm reply.

It was found impossible for the President to convince Minister Weerawansa. It was then that the President finally decided to visit Weerawansa along with the NFF representatives, thus fulfilling the promise he made to the Minister’s daughter.
