CIOB promotes green building
The Ceylon Institute of Builders (CIOB) is promoting efficient and
optimum use of resources for an environment friendly construction
industry in Sri Lanka, said President CIOB, Rohan Karunaratne.
He said the CIOB will conduct several awareness programs on
sustainable use of energy which is an essential component for the
expansion of the construction industry.
The objective of the CIOB is to provide professional assistance to
develop the construction industry. "Sri Lanka can take a cue from the
internationally accredited norms which guides the developer to implement
sustainable building concepts", Karunaratne said.
The accreditation systems measure the building performance in key
areas such as sustainable sites, water efficiency, energy and
atmosphere, material and resources, location and linkages and innovation
and design.
Green building is the creation of structures and processes which are
environmentally responsible and resource efficient throughout a
building's life-cycle.
Karunaratne said the green concept or sustainable building helps
reduce costs of construction and creates a conducive environment for
living.
The efficient use of energy, protecting the occupants health and
reducing waste, pollution and environmental degradation are some of the
key benefits of the green concept.
CIOB was set up in 1961 and over the years has contributed to the
growth of the construction industry through professional services. LF
