New TV channel for education soon

The Education Ministry will set up a television channel for education.

Students, especially in remote areas of the country will benefit by this new channel, said Education Minister Bandula Gunawardena

He said that television brings knowledge to one's doorstep. Children, however, waste valuable time in travelling to far off towns for tuition. Countries such as Japan, Australia, India, Malaysia, UK and USA have used television as a powerful mode of education, he said.

Japan was keen in setting up a separate television channel for education in the 1980s in Sri Lanka, the Minister said. He said that technical assistance will be obtained from the Indira Gandhi National Open University (IGNOU) in India for the proposed educational channel.
