CMC goes all out to avert accidents

The Colombo Municipal Council (CMC) will instal more Digital Countdown Display Boards and traffic signal lights in a bid to prevent vehicle accidents.

According to the City Traffic Police over 10-15 motor accidents are reported often at main junctions in the city even where traffic signal lights are operated.

A senior Traffic Police official said it was the responsibility of the Colombo Municipal Engineers’ Department to instal traffic lights and also countdown display boards. He said the CMC should take steps to instal these Countdown Display Boards and signal lights, especially in the Colombo City for the benefit of drivers who are often victimised due to digital countdown boards not functioning.

CMC. Engineers Department Director Nihal Wickramaratne told the Sunday Observer that due to the increase in the number of vehicle accidents, the CMC has decided to instal signal lights and digital countdown display boards at every junction in the city soon.

He said that new signal lights with display boards will be installed at the Lake House roundabout, Duplication Road, Bullers Road and five other identified places within the next few weeks.
