Free houses for disabled migrant workers
by Ananda KANNANGARA
The Sri Lanka Bureau of Foreign Employment (SLBFE) will allocate
Rs.16 million every two years to provide free housing facilities to Sri
Lankan migrant workers who become paralysed or face similar disabilities
while employed in foreign countries.
The housing units are constructed under the Sahana Diriya housing
construction program, initiated by the Bureau recently.
The Bureau has already constructed and presented nine houses to
disabled migrant workers who arrived in the country before their
employment contracts were completed.
Bureau Chairman Kingsley Ranawaka told the Sunday Observer that
construction work on another 33 houses has already commenced and will be
handed over to deserving disabled recipients before December this year.
He said each house was constructed after perusing the medical reports
of the recipients and they were built according to the nature of the
disability of each person.
