Govt to improve Northern economy

The Government is committed to look into the well-being of people in the North while laying a strong foundation to improve their economy after the end of three decades of LTTE terrorism.

The Government will upgrade the fishing industry in the Northern peninsula which is one of the main means of livelihood in the North.

The Government will set up a fishing gear manufacturing plant in the North with Indian financial assistance at a cost of Rs. 150 million, Traditional Industries and Small Enterprise Development Ministry Secretary Sivagnana Sothi said.

The proposed plant will help uplift the living standards of the fishing community in the Northern peninsula, Sivagnana Sothi said.He said moves are underway to buy modern technological equipment for the plant.

The plant will produce quality fishing nets using modern technology to be distributed among fishermen in the North.The Traditional Industries and Small Enterprise Development Ministry has taken steps to set up the proposed plant.
