Essential food items cheaper at Sathosa

The prices of essential food items at Lanka Sathosa are lower than those prevailing in the open market, said Lanka Sathosa Chairman Nalin Fernando.

He said that there are sufficient stocks of rice, dhal, potatoes, Bombay onions, sugar and dry fish to meet the market demand.

He said Lanka Sathosa runs the largest supermarket network in the country with 233 retail shops in all main cities and towns. It will be expanded to 250 before the end of the year, he said.

Fish, chicken and eggs are also available at Lanka Sathosa super shops, he said.Sathosa Wholesale Chairman, Wiraj Fernando said on instructions from the Cooperative and Internal Trade Minister Johnston Fernando, orders have been placed with Brazil, Pakistan and India to import chicken, eggs, dhal and big onions to meet the demand.

The objective of ‘Lanka Sathosa’ is to meet customer demand in maintaining reasonable prices of essential food items compared to the world market prices. Lanka Sathosa keeps only a marginal profit on its retail prices.

The table above shows some of the food items available at Lanka Sathosa. The prices are per kilogram.
