The new power grid sub stations to be set up in the country would
attract foreign investments.
Three new 132/33 KV grid power sub stations will be set up
shortly at Maho, Naula and Pallekelle to augment the power supply to
the existing substations at Panadura, Galle, Habarana, Matara and
Puttalam.
An agreement in this regard was signed recently by the Chairman of
the Ceylon Electricity Board V.D. Amarapala, Managing Director Dr. Armin
Bruck and Head of Power Transmission Division, Pawan Parikh of Siemens
Ltd, India on November 25 at the Ceylon Electricity Board (CEB) Head
office. The estimated cost of the project Rs 2.8 billion will be funded
by the Asian Development Bank (ADB).
The earlier proposal to set up sub stations at these locations did
not materialise due to financial constraints. According to CEB sources
the voltage at the Mahon and Naula sub stations usually drops from 6.p.m
to 10 p.m. due to technical faults. This had been an issue for residents
and industries in the area for some time.
The new sub station to be set up at Pallekelle will be a boon to the
industries in the Free Trade Zone at Pallekele as it would not hamper
production due to power trimmings which was a drawback for investors.
The upgrading of sub stations will be a boon for investors.
The sub stations at Panadura, Galle and Matara need more capacity
with the expansion of housing projects and industries in the area.
