Sports stadiums to be ready in time
by Nilma Dole
Despite the prevailing rains, Sri Lanka is confident that they can
complete reconstruction work at the R. Premadasa (Kettarama)
International Cricket Stadium (RPS) and the Pallekele International
cricket stadium in time to host the ICC World Cup in February next year,
said the Chairman of the State Engineering Corporation(SEC), Ashu
Marasinghe. While climate change is something that is difficult to
predict and can't be controlled, every time the rain ceases, the work
recommences on the stadiums.
"We have done much work on the VIP pavilion and the special
commentary box which is often overlooked as the highlight is on the
muddy grounds but we have been working tirelessly to complete well ahead
of our deadline in spite of the heavy rains," he said.
The new management of the SEC has given top priority to complete work
on the stadiums with state-of-the-art facilities and high quality
construction using local expertise.
According to Construction, Engineering Services, Housing and Common
Amenities Minister Wimal Weerawansa, Sri Lanka Cricket officials have
expressed satisfaction over the renovation work being done in keeping
with international standards.
The estimated cost for the renovation project is Rs. 1,310 million
with hundred percent Sri Lankan labour force working round-the-clock to
ensure that the stadiums are completed before the deadline.
A cabinet decision was taken to give priority to local products under
the procurement guidelines in the 2006 circular.
This has improved the standards of Sri Lankan manufacturers and
contractors making it a more competitive and diverse market to give the
full benefits to the local sector.
