The Department of Muslim Religious
and Cultural Affairs and Borella Ahadiyya School jointly
organised the Islamic New Year (Muharram) celebration and
the prize-giving at the MICH ‘Pasha Villa’, Colombo 9

The Ranaviru Padmalal Samaru Mawatha of
Meemana, Horana has been fully concreted with funds from the
decentralised budgetary allocations of Senior Minister for
Good Governance and Infrastructure Ratnasiri Wickramanayaka
following a request by the Horana SLFP branch organisation.

Mannar students visit Air Force Museum
Over 90 students from the Thaksana Maradamadu
College, Mannar visited the Sri Lanka Air Force Museum yesterday.
Here a section of the students view a former LTTE
aircraft which was shot down by the Air Force. The visit was
organised by the Sri Lanka Air Force Special Group Wanni (40 Wing)
Group Commander Clyde Weerakoon and Commanding Officer, Sqr. Leader
Dinesh Jayasinghe.

Devi Diadem launched
Devi Balika Vidyalaya, Borella launched its maiden
newspaper "Devi Diadem" at a ceremony at the college auditorium last
week.
The newspaper launch is another milestone in the
Vidyalaya's history, according to former Principal of Devi Balika
Vidyalaya Kalyani de Soysa.
Nirmala Kaluarachchi, the editor said that the
newspaper will provide opportunities to deserving students to
showcase their talents and creativity while improving their English
knowledge.
Moves are under way to publish this newspaper every
term and thereafter every month, Kaluarachchi said.
Kalyani de Soysa said that launch of the newspaper
will play a pivotal role in improving the writing skills of the
students and is a gateway to showcase their talents who are capable
in writing.
Nirmala Kaluarachchi said that the newspaper was
published in association with the English Literary Association of
the school

Mahinda OBA’s expo, carnival from Dec. 15
The educational and trade exhibition and carnival
organised by the Old Boys’ Association of Mahinda College, Galle to
commemorate the 100th anniversary of the school will be held from
December 15 to 19 at the Samanala Bridge ground, Galle.

Piumi Chathurangani Jayasinghe (18) of Gunnepanna,
Kandy is suffering from a heart condition that needs 'Pulmonary
Valve Replacement'.
She has been advised early open-heart surgery by
Senior Paediatric Cardiothoracic Surgeon of the Lanka Hospitals, Dr.
Richard Firmin.
The surgery is estimated to cost Rs. 700,000. and
her father who is supporting six young children is unable to bear
the costs for the surgery. He appeals for help from kind donors for

North, South to fete Maj Gen Hathurusinghe
A committee representing people from the North and
the South has organised a ceremony to felicitate the Commander of
the Security Forces, Jaffna, Major General Mahinda Hathurusinghe who
was awarded the Gusi Peace Prize 2010 in Manila recently.
The felicitation ceremony will commence on December
13 at 3.00 p.m. at the Sri Lanka Foundation Institute, with Minister
Mahinda Samarasinghe as chief guest and President’s Secretary,
Lalith Weeratunge and the Secretary of Defence, Gotabaya Rajapaksa
as distinguished guests.
The Gusi Peace Prize is a Philippines-based
international award recognising individuals from the four corners of
the globe working toward the attainment of peace and respect for
human life and dignity.
Fish market opening not finalised
Reference to the news item on “St John’s fish
traders need more business enterprises”, which appeared on the
Sunday Observer of December 5, Fisheries Minister’s Private
Secretary, Dr. Colin Fernandopulle says that the date of the opening
of the Peliyagoda Fish Market complex has not yet been finalised but
will be announced after the Fisheries Minister, Dr. Rajitha
Senaratne consults with President Mahinda Rajapaksa, on this
subject.
