The happy sporting couple

SPORTS COUPLE...... : In Kandy there is a married couple who are very much involved in sports. Director of Sports in Central Province H. G. Ariyaratne and his wife Sarojini Mediwake who married in 1982 are very much involved in the promotion of sports.

Ariyaratne - an old boy of Vidyartha College, Kandy is an allround sportsman who represented his school at Rugby, Cricket and Athletics. In Rugby, he represented Sri Lanka Schools along with players like Ajith Abeyratne of Trinity College and Maiya Gunasekera of Royal.

He joined the Ministry of Sports in 1974 and his wife Sarojini Mediwake joined the same ministry in 1977.

Sarojini is a fine netball player and represented Central Province. She is an old girl of Walala Central College. She had the opportunity of accompanying the Sri Lanka netball team as an official to Singapore in the eighties. Presently, she is serving as the District Sports Officer, Matale.

Ariyaratne has followed an athletic training coach at the Grudenberg University, Germany from 1995 to 1996. He has also toured India, Pakistan and Bangladesh as an official in athletics.

Ariyaratne and Sarojini are blessed with a son Sulochana who is a student of Trinity College and a daughter Sanwarie - a medical student.
