Sinhala and Hindu New Year:

‘Gift a book to a child’

The All Ceylon Book Sellers Union has published a poster themed ‘Gift a book during the New Year auspicious time’, for the 10th time this year to mark the Sinhala and hindu New Year when people are encouraged to present valuable books to children on New Year’s eve.

A spokesman for the Union said the colourful poster has helped to start a new culture of gifting books to children for New Year instead of toys such as toy guns and tanks which corrupt their minds.

The project has also helped to encourage children in the reading habit which was on the decline. The spokesman said that children who read books will be the future disciplined citizens. The poster was able to create an awareness among the public and bring successful results in the last ten years. “Gift a book for New Year” will be an ideal and valuable gift for children this New Year too.
