Woman jumps into Hudson River to save her dog's life
A West Village woman plunged into the Hudson River on March 22
afternoon to save her bird-chasing dog - and had to be rescued by
police, officials said.

Molly Pfeiffer, 29, was walking with her unleashed pooch, Boogie,
near Pier 54 at W. 14th St. when the dog suddenly darted toward a gull
and jumped into the chilly water, she said. "I saw her go down into the
water and I went after her," Pfeiffer told the Daily News. "The current
was pretty strong. She was going to drown." Pfeiffer hoisted the soaked
wheaten terrier mix to a plank that helps support the pier and yelled
for help as she dangled on a nearby pylon.
"I was pretty scared," she said. "I grabbed Boogie and pulled her up
on to one of the wooden supports on the pier. It was covered with algae
and really slippery." A passer-by heard Pfeiffer's cries and dialled
911. A dispatcher sent an NYPD harbour unit boat, and police plucked
Pfeiffer from the water and brought her and the pup to shore.
She called her boyfriend, who brought Boogie back to her home, before
emergency workers took Pfeiffer to Beth Israel Medical Centre. She was
checked for hypothermia and released. Pfeiffer said she owed her rescue
to the stranger who called for help. "He saved my life and Boogie's,"
she said, adding that the terrifying ordeal wouldn't stop her from doing
the same thing, again. "I love [Boogie] very much or I wouldn't have
done it otherwise," she said. "I'm just cold and wet," she said. "But
I'm all right."
