Housemaids stranded in Jordan to return

The Sri Lanka Bureau of Foreign Employment (SLBFE) confirmed that all 37 Sri Lankan female domestic workers who are believed to have fled their workplaces due to non-extending their job visas and later stranded in Jordan will arrive in the country shortly with the assistance of the Sri Lankan Embassy in Jordan.

SLBFE, Chairman Kingsly Ranawaka told the Sunday Observer that he had already directed the Bureau welfare officer, attached to the Jordanian Embassy to intervene in the matter to enable the workers to return to Sri Lanka.

Sri Lankan Ambassador to Jordan, Dr. A.W. Mohottala said when these workers first sought the Embassy assistance, necessary steps were taken to help them to return to Sri Lanka.

"But the workers had left the Embassy after few days on a request made by some Non-Governmental Organisations with the objective of returning to Sri Lanka as early as possible".

Among them, the problems of 11 workers were solved later, but they too had fled the Embassy with no reason.

"However, all these workers are still stranded in Jordan and necessary steps have been taken to send them back home after finishing the official work with the Jordan Government," he added.
