Kalliyady, a part of Manthai West AGA Division in the Mannar District.

The village about 365 Kms from Colombo has gone through many a
hardship during the past 30-years and residents were resettled recently
with the assistance of the Army.
Their main problem was the scarcity of water. Water for drinking was
supplied through bowsers by the government subject to limitations and
having a bath was undoubtedly considered a luxury. In an attempt to
bring relief to the village, the Commander of 541 Brigade of the Sri
Lanka Army, Brigadier M.A.S.K. Muhandhiram, whose brigade is in charge
of security in the area made a request for assistance from Munchee.
The 541 Brigade volunteered to handle the construction of the water
service project free. It was decided to construct a tube well to get
water and to provide common areas for bathing and drinking.
Additionally, water supply was also provided to the Kalliyady Tamil
School for drinking purposes.
Prof. V.K. Dissanayake of the Geological Faculty, Peradeniya
University assisted in identifying a location for the tube well and the
project was completed within a short period in keeping with the
objectives of Munchee Samaga Gamata Sarana. Munchee also awarded Munchee
Tikiri Shishyadara - student assistance for education to five students
of the Kalliyady Tamil School including a girl who had lost a leg during
the war against terrorism. |
