Move to clear heavy backlog:
New Commission to clear 3,000 bribery cases
The newly appointed members of the Commission to
Investigate Allegations of Bribery and Corruption are in the process
of clearing a staggering 3,000 bribery cases which had piled up
during the 13 months of its inaction, Chairman Justice D. J. de S.
Balapatabendi told the Sunday Observer.

Kollupitiya police took in for questioning Dinuk
Bandara Kiriella, a son of UNP MP Lakshman Kiriella for allegedly
assaulting a police officer on duty at the Kollupitiya junction when
a policemen intervened to save the driver from being assaulted,

Workers’ collective agreement to be signed soon
Ceylon Workers’ Congress (CWC) President and
Deputy Minister of Economic Affairs Muthu Sivalingam told the Sunday
Observer that their fifth round of talks with the Regional
Plantation Companies (RPCs) on Tuesday made considerable headway
towards signing a fresh Collective Agreement over the wage increase
for workers and added that they were optimistic of striking a deal
at the next round of talks.

Govt’s policies open to constructive criticism
Justice Minister Rauff Hakeem said that the
Government always welcomes any constructive criticism of its
policies so that it can implement what is best in a very consensual
way. The Minister said a proper democracy could function only if the

President Maithripala Sirisena is in Thailand making a three-day official visit and attending the second Asia Cooperation Dialogue Summit. The Dialogue Summit that brings together 34 nations in the Asian region takes place from October 8 -10 in Bangkok under the theme "One Asia, Diverse Strength".
Official level discussions have commenced between Sri Lanka and Iran on reviving trade agreements that were signed between the two countries and will be put into operation soon after ironing out technicalities, Minister of Industry and Commerce, Rishad Bathiudeen said. 
Pakistan on Friday (September 30) officially postponed the 19th SAARC Summit scheduled to be held in Islamabad on November 9 and 10. A new set of dates for holding the Summit will be announced soon through the Chair of SAARC (Nepal), reports said. 
Due to the prevailing drought, water levels of the main reservoirs have dropped to half its capacity, with authorities warning that drastic measures may need to be taken if water is to be continuously released from the reservoirs for power generation.
