Easwaramma Day today

The Easwaramma Day, the death commemoration of Bhagavan Sri Sathya Sai Baba, will be held today, at the Sivananda Nilayam, Hindu Ladies College, Rudra Mawatha, Colombo 6 commencing 4.30 p.m.

The program has been organised by the Colombo Samithi of Bhagavan Sri Sathya Sai Seva Organisation.

All are lovingly invited to participate in this function.


Rtd IP and social worker passes away

Retired Police Inspector Mahinda Jayaweera a well-known social worker in Hibutuwelgoda, Kelaniya, passed away and the funeral will be held at the General Cemetery, Hibutuwelgoda at 4 pm today.

Jayaweera (81) was the father of Col. Jayanath Jayaweera, Centre Commandant, Sri Lanka Light Infantry, Lt.Col. Wijayanath Jayaweera, who is serving in the UN Peace Keeping mission in Haiti and Parakum Jayaweera of the Ministerial Security Division.

His remains lie at No 2 National Housing Scheme, Hibutuwelgoda, Kelaniya.


Symposium on disaster management

Red Lotus Organisation will conduct a public symposium on 'Challenges Facing Disaster Management' on Tuesday, 7th June at No. 380/7 Sarana Road, Wijerama Mawatha, Colombo 7 from 2.00 to 5.00 p.m.

The speakers are Prof. Samantha Hettiarachchi on 'Tsunami and Coastal Hazards' and Prof. Kapila Dahanayake on 'Prevention and Control of Landslides'.

The chief guest and guest of honour will be Minister of Disaster Management Mahinda Amaraweera and Minister of Social Services Felix Perera, Secretary, Ministry of Disaster Management, Marina Mohammed, Secretary, Ministry of Social Services, Yamuna Chitranganie, Director General, Disaster Management Centre Major General Gamini Hettiarachchi and Assistant Resident Representative, UNDP Dr. Ananda Mallawatantri will grace the occasion.


Know India Program: Applications close on June 7

Applications are invited by the High Commission of India, Colombo for the 'Know India Program' (KIP) scheduled to be held in India during 2011-12.

The program is open for youth in the age group of 18-26 years. This program is open to 'People of Indian Origins' (PIO) residing in Sri Lanka (and not NRI). Selected participants would be required to purchase air tickets for their journey from the country of residence to India and back. 90% of the total cost of air ticket, at lowest economy excursion fare, would be returned to the participants on their successful completion of the program.

Bellanwila festival begins on Aug. 11

The annual Bellanwila Esala Maha Perahera will begin on August 11 and conclude on August 27 with the Randoli Perahera followed by the water-cutting ceremony on August 28 morning at the Boralesgamuwa ferry and offering of deva dana.

The programs is as follows: August 11-13: Sri Somarathana Memorial Dhamma Desana, August 14-19: Sathi Perith Desana, 20: Deva Dutha Perahera and Kumbal Perahera, 21-24: Mal Perahera, 25: Pawada Perahera, 26: Ransivili Perahera, 27: Final Randoli Perahera, 28: Water-cutting ceremony at Boralesgamuwa ferry and offering of deva dana.

 


Drama Comp returns!

Drama lovers rejoice as Sri Lanka's second largest drama competition, Drama Comp returns for the 25th successive year. The event organised by the Interact Club of Royal College, Drama Comp has rapidly grown from just another competition into one of the most prominent and prolific events in the Sri Lankan dramatic sphere.

Eagerly anticipated by theatregoers both young and old, this year's competition will see Ladies College, Ananda College, Anula Vidyalaya and St. Peter's College competing to win the favour of this year's panel of judges consisting of Thushara Hettihamu, Jerome Silva, Neluka Silva and Azim Rali.

In addition to the stellar line up of plays you will bear witness to, Drama Comp 2011 will also feature some brilliant guest performances including a dance troupe from the British School.

Drama Comp 2011 will be held at its longtime venue, the Lionel Wendt Theatre tomorrow June 6 from 7.00 p.m. onwards. Shuaib (077-8965928) and Rushil (077-4972445) are co-ordinating the event.


Book launch

A 184-page full-colour book titled 'The Complete Course for Hand Embroidery', authored by Ramyani Leelaratne will be launched on Tuesday. The author, an experienced sewing instructor and handicraft expert who heads the Crafts International Sewing Centre, has sourced over 1,000 latest Sri Lankan and international designs for this book.
