Sri Lanka Insurance to enter hotel sector

Sri Lanka Insurance Corporation Ltd (SLI), the largest composite
insurance provider in the country holding Rs 88.9 billion in assets and
the highest contributor to the shareholders fund with its contribution
of Rs 18 billion, is planning to diversify into the Hotel Sector this
year.
Managing Director and Chief Executive Officer Mohan De Alwis said the
company holding the highest life fund worth Rs 49.5 billion is planning
to build a 200 room hotel in Hambantota with an investment of Rs 4.5
billion.
He said discussions are under way to select a managing and equity
partner for the project which is expected to commence this year. “We
believe that with this investment, SLI will be able to contribute
towards sustainable economic growth of Sri Lanka”, he said.
De Alwis said that foreign tour operators and management companies
will do the marketing of the hotel and the majority of the tourists
coming to the hotel will be pre booked tourists. “Therefore, we should
cater to the requirements of the managers of the hotel”, he said. -SG |
