Kandy Sports Club did not live up to expectations, may be due to
rain, which made the conditions underfoot soggy. The home team too, had
to face the same situation , but both teams despite the wet ball made
fewer number of mistakes.
Kandy opened scoring in the fifth minute when Pradeep Liyanage scored
off a line out and Roshan Weeraratne added the extra points. Thereafter,
fly half Fazil Marija pierced through the 'CR' defence to touch down for
an unconverted try. Full back of either side had an off day when CR&FC's
Reza Mubarak failed to put over as many as five penalties and Kandy's
Tharinda Chanaka missed three kicks.
The 'red shirts' reduced the lead when Srinath Sooriyabandara broke
off to touch down under the post which Mubarak put over the easy
conversion. CRs Mohammed Sharif taking over the kicking process misfired
one but Reza Mubarak compensated for the miss by making no mistake with
a relatively easy kick.
The winners led 17/10 at the breather.
On resumption, although rain had relented, both teams failed to
impress and only two tries each by Sajith Saranga for Kandy and during
the dying stages of the match Ishan Noor touched down for the Longden
Place Club. Both tries went unconverted.
