Richmond College and Rajapaksa Central win boys and girls Championships at Southern Province meet

Athletics: Richmond College, Galle and Rajapaksa Central College, Weeraketiya won the overall boys and girls championships respectively at the Southern Province inter-school track and field championships held last week.


 Boys champions - Richmond College receive the trophy from Anura Gunaratne - Southern Provincial Councillor and Advisor to the President. Pictures by Priyan de Silva - Matara Sports Corr.


Girls Champions - Rajapaksa Central College, Weeraketiya receive the champions trophy from Chief Guest Kithsiri Liyanagama - Provincial Director of Education, Southern Province.

In the boys championship, Richmond came on top with 49 points, with Mahinda College in second place with 47 points and Rahula College third with 44 points.

Among the girls, Rajapaksa Central College won with 79 points, with St. Mary's Matara in second position with 58 points and Sujatha Balika Vidyalaya came third with 43 points.

Akila Imantha Nilaweera of St. Servatius College, Matara and I.G. Indika Shrimali of Rajapaksa Central College, Weeraketiya were adjudged the best athletes in the boys and girls sections.

Ten meet records were established: Under-15 girls 100 metres hurdles: Naduni Laochana Nilaweera of St. Mary's Convent, Matara 18.1 seconds; 400 metres girls under-15: S.H. Sithara Udayangani (Dharmasoka College, Ambalangoda) 1 win 03.2 seconds; 4x400 metres relay girls under-15; Debarawewa National School, 4 mins 36.6 seconds.

Boys under-17: 110 metres hurdles: Akila Imantha Nilaweera of St. Servatius College, Matara 14.9 secs; 400 metres boys under 17: M.G. Ashan Indika of St. Servatius College, Matara 57.3 seconds.

Under-17 girls pole Vault: Y.K. Amila Prabodhini of Vidyaraja N.S. 2.20 metres.

Under-17 girls - 400 metres: I.G. Indika Shrimali (Rajapaksa Central School) 1 min 00.7 seconds.

Under-19 girls - 5,000 metres: A.G. Shashikala Seuwandi (Rajapaksa Central College) 19 minutes 20.2 seconds.

Under-21 boys: Pole Vault: L.L.D. Lakshitha Jayasekera (Mahinda, Galle) 3.12 metres.

Under-21 girls - Pole Vault: V.P. Gayani Thakshila Sandamali of Vidyaraja National School, 2.20 metres.

The following were adjudged the best athletes in their respective age groups:

Girls under-15: S.M. Sithara Udayangani of Dharmasoka College, Ambalangoda.

Under-17 girls: I.G. Indika Srimali of Rajapaksa Central College.

Under-19 girls: Anjali Geeshani Witharana of St. Mary's Convent, Matara.

Boys under-15: W.T. Mithun Lasith of P. de S. Kularatna College.

Boys under-17: Akila Imantha Nilaweera of St. Servatius College, Matara.

Boys under-19: M. Dilshan Madhusanka of Dharmasoka College, Amblangoda.
