Kingswood in sensational win

Kingswood College, Kandy, in a ‘do or die’ effort scored a sensational 17 points (2 goals, 1 penalty) to 13 (1 goal, 2 penalties) win over the more fancied St. Peter’s College, Bambalapitiya in their schools under-20 Division One rugby tournament match played at the Bogambara Stadium, Kandy yesterday.

At half time, St. Peter’s College led 6-3. This match was a matter of life and death for the Kingswoodians as a win here will ensure them of remaining in the Division One next season. a loss meant demotion into the lower division next season.In the 6th minute of play the Peterites took the lead through a 30 metre penalty put over by fly half Dulaj Perera.

Nine minute later, the Kingswoodians equalise through a 30 metre penalty put over by fullback Thilina Weerasinghe.

The Peterites once again took over the lead in the 20th minute when Kingswood’s three-quarters were spotted off side and Dulaj Perera fired the penalty which was awarded.

The Kingswoodians changed their pattern of play in the second half and they were seen more on the offensive but poor finish deprived them the chances of scoring. They also missed two penalties from kicking range. In the 26 minute came the best try of the match when the Kingsswoodians were pressing hard to score deep inside the Peterite territory.
