More English medium subjects from 2015

The Higher Education Ministry on Thursday said schoolchildren should improve their knowledge of English from now, since steps have already been taken to conduct many subjects in the English medium at universities from 2015.

Higher Education Minister S.B. Dissanayake told the Sunday Observer that the Government has decided to offer English medium for some subjects at GCE (OL) and (AL) classes from 2015, so that students could easily access local and international job markets. He said subjects including Medicine, Engineering, Law, Mathematics, Accountancy, Information Technology and Administration are currently conducted in the English medium at universities which would enable graduates to easily find employment.

The Minister said unlike in the past, most schoolchildren are now interested in following professional educational courses in the English medium, since they have realised that more and better employment opportunities are available for those who follow higher studies in the English medium. Minister Dissanayake said under a special program, conducted in collaboration with the Education Ministry, more teachers and lecturers will be recruited to schools and universities in future to expand students' knowledge of English.
