Prime Minister D. M. Jayaratne, during a recent visit to Chavakachcheri, met the residents of Navakkuli, a Sinhala village in the area and discussed their problems. They appealed to the Premier to take steps to reopen Navakkuli Sinhala Vidyalaya.


 Rs. 590 million has been set apart to asphalt a 30 kilometre long stretch of roads in the Hali-Ela electorate under the ‘Pubudamu Wellassa’ road development programme. The project is executed under the supervision of the Central Engineering Consultancy Bureau. Here Foreign Employment Promotion & Welfare Minister Dilan Perera launches the redevelopment of Ketawala-Etampitiya road. Hali-Ela P.S. member Ajith Jayasiri was also present.


The Chairperson of “Mother Sri Lanka Trust” Janaki Kuruppu presents the maiden copy of her book to the Secretary to the President Lalith Weeratunga at a function at the Galle Face Hotel recently. The book titled “Mother Sri Lanka”, relates the journey of the Trust from its inception in 2008 to the present day.

The National Technical Advisor, UN-Habitat, Sri Lanka Dr. Fahmy Ismail has been recognised among the Australian scholars of distinction in the book ‘Endeavours of Excellence’, a publication by the Australian Government: Australian Education International, of 60 years of Australian Scholarships in South and South East Asia. Here Dr. Ismail presents the book to Secretary General, Colombo Plan Secretariat, Colombo Dato Patricia Yoon-Moi Chia.




John Diandas memorial lecture

The John Diandas memorial lecture on "Can the transport sector continue to be a driver of economic activity in Sri Lanka" will be delivered by Senior Lecturer, Department of Economics, University of Colombo Dr. T.L. Gunaruwan on July 27 at the Ceylon Continental.

It is organised by the Chartered Institute of Logistics and Transport.


Health camp

Junior Chamber International Sri Lanka in collaboration with JCISL Colombo Chapter and Helpaid Sri Lanka have organised a health camp today from 8 a.m. - 5 p.m. at the Roman Catholic Tamil Maha Vidyalaya, Mundel, Chilaw. Medicine and pairs of spectacles will be provided free to the needy.


Ramani Subasinghe's book launch on Tuesday

Silumina journalist Ramani Subasinghe's book Daham Uyana will be launched on Tuesday, July 26 at 3.30 at Sri Sambuddhaloka Viharaya, Colombo Fort, under the patronage of Ven. (Dr.) Brahmanawatte Seevali Anunayake Thera, Registrar of Amarapura Maha Sangha Sabha.


Medical camp

The medical and nutrition subcommittee of the Past Pupils' Association of Anula Vidyalaya, Nugegoda has organised the annual medical camp for the past and present teachers of the School on July 29 at the school main hall from 2.30 p.m.

The Association appeals to all the past teachers, present teachers and the old Anulians who are medical officers to participate to make this event a success.


Ahmadiyya peace award for Hazrat Mirza Masroor Ahmad

The head of the worldwide Ahmadiyya Muslim Jama'at, Hazrat Mirza Masroor Ahmad, spoke at length on the issue of achieving global peace while delivering the keynote address at the 8th annual Peace Symposium of the Ahmadiyya Muslim Jama'at UK, held at the Baitul Futuh Mosque in Morden recently. The event attracted an audience of over 1,000, including Government Ministers, MPs, senior foreign embassy officials and members of the British Armed Forces.

During the event the second Ahmadiyya Peace Prize was presented to Abdul Sattar Eidhi, the founder of the Eidhi Foundation, in recognition of his continued efforts in facilitating the relief efforts for the Japan earthquake victims.

Siobhain McDonagh, MP for Mitcham and Morden, quoted a verse of the Holy Qur'an which advocates justice and fair dealing in all circumstances. She said that justice and tolerance were fundamental to a peaceful society.

Lord Eric Avebury who last year won the inaugural Ahmadiyya Peace Prize for his continued efforts to promote human rights across the world said that the root cause of all the recent conflict in the world was intolerance. He said that existing UN mechanisms required reform and that he felt that the Ahmadiyya Muslim Community was very well placed to play a key role in that process


Baby Tharul needs help

Baby Tharul Methmina Peiris of No. 213, Saman Mawatha, Siddhamulla, Piliyandala is afflicted with biliary atresia, a condition of liver failure.

Dr. Dilrukshi Rubera, Consultant Paediatrician has recommended early liver transplantation. The surgery to be done in India is estimated to cost Rs. 8 million and the parents appeal for public contributions to be remitted to A/c No 102960869146 of Sampath Bank headquarters, Colombo.
