Ulagalla Resort wins Gold at National Green Awards
Ulagalla Resort received the Presidential Gold Award for the industry
best eco practices, which encourage businesses to go beyond compliances
to protect the environment while giving more knowledge to the public and
private sector on green initiatives.
The awards ceremony was held recently under the patronage of
President Mahinda Rajapaksa at the BMICH. This is the first ever
Presidential Awards recognising 'greener' businesses.
Ulagalla is a LEED (Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design)
certified resort with 'Silver' rating by the United States Green
Building Council (USGBC). Rain water harvesting, biogas powered lighting
on path ways, non-motorised activities, organic fruit and vegetable
garden, are a few of the environment-friendly practices being carried
out.
One important principle of sustainable construction is repair and
reuse of existing facilities.
In this context, a decision was taken to restore the Walawwa with
minimum new material.
