Korea beat Sri Lanka in three straight sets in Women's Tourney
Chinese Taipei, Sept.15, 2011: Korea, one of the favourites for the
top place breezed past weaker and less experienced opponents Sri Lanka
in three straight sets (25-9, 25-11, 25-6) in only 53 minutes in Pool
'D' in the second match of the Asian Women's Volleyball Championship at
National Taiwan University Sports Center here on Thursday.
Ten out of the 12 players from Korea were sent to play with Jung Dae
Young excelling for Korea with 10 points, followed by Kim Se Young with
8 and 23-years-old Korea's 'spiker' Kim Yeon Koung and Han Song Yi with
seven points each.
Sri Lanka were led by Dinesha Jayamaha (seven points) and Leena
Somaratne (4).
Korea, who were to meet Turkmenistan on the second day of the
Championship, now will meet their longtime rival Japan on the third day
due to Turkmenistan's last moment withdrawal from the tournament. Korea
quickly took the first set against Sri Lanka with ease thanks to their
technical advantage.
Korea led through the set with their attackers Kim Yeon-Koung and Han
Song-Yi delivering exceptional attacks and powerful serves.
Due to the big gap, Korea coach replaced almost all the key players.
On the other hand, Sri Lanka, with their smaller figures and
relatively with less international match experience, struggled to seize
points from Korea.
The first set with Korea winning 25-9. The second and third sets saw
Korea pull ahead from the beginning as Sri Lanka were not able to handle
Korea's massive attacks.
Korea continued to impress the spectators with their allround skills.
They claimed the second set 25-11 despite one rotation error and the
third at 25-6 Korea piled on the points and eventually claimed the win
3-0.
