Drive for Elders - 2011

The members of the Vintage Car Club of Ceylon (VCOC) are known to love and care for their ageing motor vehicles. They also wish to remind others about the need to care for Elderly Human beings.

Hence the VCOC is planning a 'Drive for Elders' to celebrate the World Elders' Day. The drive for Elders has been organized by the Vintage Car Club of Ceylon to be held on the 1st of October (World Elders' Day). 90 inmates of the Gamini Matha Home for the Elders be treated to a drive around Colombo in a Fleet of Vintage Cars from the 1920s, 30s and the 40s.

Also being World Children's Day, a few children from the Laxmi Home in Seeduwa will also join the event. The drive will commence from Maitland Place (near the SSC/NCC) at 3pm and will head towards the Gamini Matha Home near the Gangaramaya Temple, Colombo-02, to pick up the Elders.

The drive will commence past the SLTA, Independence Hall, Racecourse Avenue, Bullers Road, Galle Road, Galle Face and end up with a Tea Party for the Elders and the Children at the Hotel Taj Samudra.

The participants will be gifted with Care packs donated by well-wishers. The funds raised from the event will go towards much needed building repairs and equipment for the home.

This event has been organized with the support of the Classic Car Club of Ceylon and the Volkswagen Beetle Owners Club. Janashakthi Insurance is the main sponsor of the event.

Drive for the Elders: 2010 The drive for the elders started off from the Gamini Matha Home for the Elders in Colombo-02 with the intention of raising funds for the home as well as to provide an enjoyable day out to its residents.

The elders were treated to a reminiscing ride around the city in vehicles they grew up with followed by a traditional Sri Lankan lunch.

The funds raised went towards new signage for the home, the supply of provisions for the home and 'care packs' for the elders.

Popular classics such as the Morris Minor and the Austin A40 were sought after with most members having fond memories with regard to these models.

Gamini Matha Home for Elders is under 5 minutes away from all the Colombo city hotels and can be reached at: 177, Sir James Pieris Mawatha, Colombo 2. Contact Telephone No.: +94 112 434 792.
