Markss wellness campaign in Polonnaruwa
Markss Healthcare had organised a medical education program at the
Deer Park Hotel, Girithale, with over 25 doctors including consultant
paediatricians, obstetricians and gynaecologists, surgeons, physicians,
medical officers and family practitioners in the Polonnaruwa District.
A presentation on paediatric emergencies was made by Consultant
Paediatrician Dr. Udaya de Silva which was important to medical officers
and family practitioners since they encounter such emergencies in their
daily practice. Dr. de Silva discussed emergencies such as poisoning,
snake bites, asthma, drug reactions, allergies, anaphylaxis and choking.
He spoke on first aid for many conditions and highlighted the
importance of using all opportunities to create public awareness on
these matters.
Dr De Silva stressed that complications could be avoided if the
public is aware of what to do in certain situations.
For example, in the case of a snake bite, it is paramount that the
child is rushed to the hospital immediately, after the area is
thoroughly washed with soap and water.
If possible if the dead snake or a clue to the identity of the
serpent is furnished, it could be useful. In the case of poisoning, it
is important to identify the poison as quickly as possible. If it is a
child it is important to look around the area to ascertain the cause.
