Children’s Arts Festival awards ceremony
The awards ceremony of the State Children’s Arts Festival will be
held, coinciding with the International Children’s Day, on October 1 at
10.30 am at the John de Silva Theatre, Colombo, under the patronage of
Cultural Affairs Minister T.B. Ekanayake.
The organisers received 45,727 entries this year and the winners were
selected in two rounds of competitions.
The competition was held under five age categories and the first
place winners will receive a gold medal, a certificate and a cash prize.
In addition there will be 10 awards of excellence in each category,
15 certificates of commendation and 20 merit awards.
Prince Gunasekera launches election campaign

Sports journalist Prince Gunasekera launched his election campaign
with a dana to 16 ‘Kiriammas’ to invoke blessings.
A popular social worker he held office as a Pradeshiya Sabha member
for 18 years undefeated. He eschews mud-slinging politics and conducts
his campaign in an eco-friendly manner. His persistent efforts to
improve the literacy and provide drinking water to over 12,600 families
in the Kotikawatte-Mulleriyawa Pradeshiya Sabha area have come to
fruition. The literary festival being held since 1988 is largely due to
his labour.

Law week in Anuradhapura
The Ministry of Justice in its efforts to herald a law-abiding
society will launch a series of programs to raise awareness among the
people on the laws of the land.
The program will inaugurate a ‘Law Week’ in Anuradhapura followed by
lectures and workshops, legal aid and problems relating to law, the
sources said.
Kidney patient appeals for help
Thirty-eight year old Kanchana Amarasinghe and a father of two of
167/2, Sunethrarama Rd, Kadawatha is in end stage kidney failure and has
been recommended by Consultant Nephrolgist of the National Hospital of
Sri Lanka, Dr. A.L.M. Nazar to undergo kidney transplant.
Around Rs. 80,000/- per month is needed for regular treatment and as
he is not in a position to afford same appeals to the generous public

Thyroid cancer patient needs help
Forty-six-year-old Dilanthika Karunaratne of 46/1, Poorwarama Rd,
Colombo is suffering from cancer of the thyroid and has been treated by
Consultant Surgeon, Dr. Lalitha Piyasiri, at the Sri Jayawardenepura
General hospital.
She has been advised to undergo radioactive iodine treatment which is
available at the Oasis Hospital, Colombo and the procedure is estimated
to cost around Rs. 200,000. As Dilanthika is unable to bear the cost she
appeals to the generous public to remit their contributions to A/C No.

Vavuniya reporter passed away
Veteran journalist and Vavuniya correspondent of the Lake House Group
of Newspapers T. Vivekarasa, passed away recently after a brief illness.
As a journalist and social worker, with an illustrious journalistic
career spanning over 30 years, he had done yeoman services to the local
community and a large number of people, including political leaders,
government agents, government officials, teachers, journalistic
colleagues and schwoolchildren crowded his house to pay their last
respects.
