ATHLETICS: Though there was rain on all four days of the John Tarbat Junior National Track and Field Meet at the Bogambara Stadium, Kandy, there were some encouraging performances recorded. There were over 5,000 competitors from all over the island who participated.

There were three records at the meet. In the high jump event for under 15, Udayantha Bandara of Gateway International, Colombo won with a height of 1.82 metres to beat the 16 year-old record of W.P.M. Isuru Mihiranga which clocked 54.02 seconds in 400 metres under 15 to improve on the 22 year-old record of L.D.P. Delungahawatte in 1989. Mihiranga was from Kuliyapitiya Central College.

The third record was by B.L.V.L. Liyanage of Sir John Kotelawala MMV, Kurunegala who 'clocked' 26.06 seconds in the 200 metres for girls under 13 to improve on the 13 year-old record of Malka Wickremanayake of Sangamitta College, Matale.
