Doctor turns hotelier to build Sorowwa

Dr. Nawaz Jiffry, Consultant Obstetrician and Gynaecologist is probably the first Sri Lankan doctor to follow a Diploma in Travel and Tourism Economics and Hotel Management, to venture into his Sorowwa Resort and Spa, a Rs. 250 m project in Habarana.

The resort has been built overlooking the Habarana Lake. It has 23 star class guest rooms opening to an array of fauna and flora.


Increase in Regional Knowledge Sharing - ADB

Asian Development Bank (ADB) President Haruhiko Kuroda said that intensive knowledge sharing among its member countries and development partners is essential for greater development effectiveness in Asia and the Pacific.

"Knowledge solutions are becoming more important in Asia," Kuroda said at the Republic of Korea-ADB Conference on Knowledge Sharing and Development Effectiveness held at ADB headquarters in Manila.

"We recognise that knowledge sharing is an indispensable complement to financial and technical assistance."


Sri Lanka strengthens trade ties with Russia

"Russia and Sri Lanka enjoy gradual growth of bilateral trade. Tea exports to Russia have been robust and the time has come for us to seek comprehensive efforts to widen our economic co-operation, beyond conventional means, to create a advantageous economic relationship, for countries,"said the President of the Sri Lanka- Russia Business Council, Nimal S. Cooke, Executive Director of the Maharaja Organisation Projects (Pvt) Ltd. He was addressing the business community during the recent Trade and Investment Promotion Mission to Moscow, Russia.


Employers Federation goes to Jaffna and Hambantota

The Employers Federation of Ceylon (EFC) signed a Memorandum of Understanding with the Yarlpanam Chamber of Commerce and Industries and the Hambantota District Chamber of Commerce to extend its services to businesses across the island.

The EFC already represents a wide variety of industries from plastics to plantations and financial and service sector. However, until now, its membership has been fairly Colombo-centric. While the government rebuilds Jaffna's infrastructure, the Yarlpanam Chamber has taken on the development of the small and medium industry sector in the district.
