Post Day celebrations today

The national celebrations of World Post Day 2011, organised by the
Postal Services Ministry will be held at the Postal Headquarters at 4.00
pm today.
Prime Minister D.M. Jayaratne will be the chief guest. Postal
Services Minister Jeewan Kumaranatunge, Ministry Secretary Hemasiri
Fernando and Post Master General K.B. Dissanayake will take part in the
event.
Since 1798 the Postal Department has been providing yeoman services
to the country. The need to develop the postal sector to cater to the
increasing global demand is crucial.
The Ministry has planned to implement several programs under the
Mahinda Chinthana Idiri Dekma on the directive of Minister
Kumaranatunge. The launch of a teleshop system to popularise the postal
accounts among the public is one such initiative.
The networking of post offices is nearing completion. With the
implementation of this project the Postal Department plans to provide a
range of new services. The Government commissioned post offices with
modern facilities in the North and the East. The services of the Central
Postal Exchange was regulated and security cameras installed to monitor
the operations.
With a view to expediting postal delivery in the North and the East
the Ministry has provided lorries and vans to all main post offices in
the area. Computers were also provided to improve the efficiency of the
Department.
