Sittamgallena Esala Maha perahera begins

The 44th Esala Maha Perahera of the historic Sittamgallena Raja Maha Vihara, Walasmulla which commenced yesterday will continue for seven days.

The Randoli Maha Perahera being held under the patronage of President Mahinda Rajapaksa, Prime Minister D.M. Jayaratne, Speaker Chamal Rajapaksa, Economic Development Minister Basil Rajapaksa, Hambantota district MP Namal Rajapaksa and Defence Secretary Gotabaya Rajapaksa will parade the streets on Wednesday, October 12 at 9.00 pm.

The seven-day festival will attract over two million devotees, the sources said. Chief Basnayaka Nilame Ganganath Abeygunawardena was instrumental in developing an improved road network at a cost of Rs. 45 million, supplying electricity to the Upper Vihara and an information technology centre for the benefit of devotees.
