Royal reign supreme at regatta

Royal College dominated at the 38th Annual Royal-Thomian Regatta by winning all the races except for one,in the main competition to win the overall championship and the T.N. Fernando Memorial Trophy at the Beira Lake Waters yesterday. The Royalists won the main event the Boat Race creating a new record clocking 2.55 minutes to erase the previous 3.02 M. set by S. Thomas' in 2009. There were also records set in the 'B' Four, 'A' Scull and 'B' Scull where Royal went on to gather 52 points to the Thomians 4.


The victorious Royal Boat Race crew comprising Chirath Karunanayake (B), Ajmal Sideek (2), Jehan Samarasekera (3), Sanjiva Jayasuriya (S) and Pasan Ranaweera(Cox) celebrating their record breaking win against their Thomian counterparts at the annual Royal-Thomian regatta at the Beira Lake waters yesterday. It was a day that the Royal power prevailed over their traditional rivals as the Thomians were able to win only one race the 'B' double scull with a timing of 3.18 sec. To the Royalists 3.24.

The Royal Boat race crew comprised of Charith Karunanayake (B), Ajmal Sideek (2), Jehan Samarasekera (3), Sanjiva Jayasuriya (S) and Pasan Ranaweera (Cox) they gave a record braking display in the dusk beating the Thomian crew Chamal Jayanetti (B), Zydhney Fazal (2), Shelan de Livera (3), Sajin de Livera (S) and Kemil Peter (Cox).Royal has won the Boat race on 19 occasions to the Thomians 23 and the Royalist have won the overall championship annexing the T.N. Fernando Memorial trophy 14 times to the Thomians 18.

'A' scull: Chirath Karunanayake (Royal) beat Chamal Jayanetti (S. Thomas') 3.28 sec - 3.41 sec.

'B' scull: Jehan Samarasekera (Royal) beat Zydhney Fazal (S. Thomas') 3.29 sec. - 3.32 sec.

'B' double scull: Ming-Hua-Chang and Ramith Nanayakkara (S. Thomas') beat Sahan Warnasuriya and Dulaj Rajaguru (Royal) 3.18 sec - 3.24 sec.

'A' double scull: Jehan Samarsekera and Chirath Karunanayake (Royal) beat Shelan de Livera and Sajin de Livers (S. Thomas') 3.13 sec.- 3.22 sec.

'A' Pairs: Sanjiva Jayasuriya (S), Sahan warnasuriya (B), (Royal) beat Chamal Jayanetti (B) and Zydhney Fazal (St. Thomas') 3.12-3.14 sec.

'B' Fours: Arith Cooray (B), Ishan Perera (2), Sahan Warnasuriya (S), Dulaj Rajaguru (S) and Dhanushka Perera (Cox) beat Shakul Latiff (B), Ramith Nanayakkara (2), Akshan Wickremanayake, Ming-Hua.Chang (S) and Chanaka de Alwis (Cox). 3.03 seconds (New record).
