Education Minister Bandula Gunawardena told Parliament yesterday the
results of the G.C.E. Advanced Level Examination would be released
before the end of this year.
The Minister said the release of A/L results has been delayed this
year as the examination was conducted under two different syllabuses. As
a result there has been a confusing on how to calculate the Z score
which would enable the students to qualify for the university entrance.
Minister Gunawardena made this statement in Parliament in response to
a question from DNA MP Anura Kumara Dissanayake who asked about the
reason to delay the release of A/L results. MP Dissanayake said the
University Grants Commission (UGC) is held responsible for the delay and
not the Examination Department.
"We can release the results even today but the UGC has asked us to
delay it till the Z score formula is finalised.
A committee of mathematicians and statisticians has been set up to
work out a formula which would calculate an aggravate of the marks
obtained by the students who sat for A/L in both old and new syllabuses
and agree on cut off mark or Z score."
The Minister admitted that he also cannot understand the new formula
which is to be applied to calculate the Z score for the student who sat
for the GCE Advanced Level Examination this year.
