Seed paddy for Mullaitivu farmers

The Government has distributed 36,635 bushels of seed paddy among 4,995 farmers in the Mullaitivu district, Industries and Commerce Minister Rishad Badiudeen said.

Accordingly, seed paddy has been distributed among the farmers in Thunukkai, Mandhai East, Oddusuddan, Marudhayan Patru and Puthukudiyiruppu Divisional Secretariat Divisions.

The Minister said the Government is providing enough assistance to improve the agriculture sector in the district.

A large area of land has come under the plough this year as a result of de-mining being completed in these areas, the Minister said. Thousands of acres of agricultural land, which had been abandoned by farmers in the North and the East, are being turned into lush paddy fields and crop cultivations, Badiudeen said.

The Minister said that the Agriculture Department has cultivated paddy, onions, plantains and green gram in 32,000 acres in the Mullaitivu district.

Plans are afoot to produce food items using the production in the district, the Minister said.
