1,000 rural schools to be upgraded

The Education Ministry will carry out a Scientific Mapping Exercise (SME) on all rural and remote schools in the country before commencing the proposed 1,000 secondary schools development program.

According to the Education Ministry, out of 9,800 Government schools in the country, the majority have already been provided with basic facilities.

Education Minister Bandula Gunawardane told the Sunday Observer that the proposed 1,000 secondary school development program is a successful educational project and the development of schools under this project will be completed within four years commencing from this year.

He said the main objective of the program is to provide quality education to 4.2 million schoolchildren.

The proposed secondary school development program will help schoolchildren to acquire a better knowledge on English, Science, Mathematics and Information Technology which are considered job-oriented subjects.
